Motorists often cause wildfires to spark alongside roads that could have been prevented by following basic safety rules.
- When driving or pulling over to the side of the road, take special precautions.
- Make sure your vehicle is properly maintained and never allow chains (or any other parts) to drag from your vehicle that could create sparks.
- Don’t drive your vehicle onto dry grass or brush. Hot exhaust pipes can start fires.
- Maintain proper tire pressure. Driving on exposed wheel rims can cause sparks.
- Maintain your brakes; brakes worn too thin can cause metal to metal contact, which can cause sparks.
- NEVER discard a lit cigarette from your car.
- Always carry a fire extinguisher with you.
