Understanding & Preparing for Red Flag Warnings

Understanding and Preparing for Red Flag Warnings

Red Flag Warnings, released by the National Weather Service, signify extreme fire risk, necessitating extra care and caution. These warnings signal current or imminent fire conditions.

When a Red Flag Warning is announced, promptly:
  • Ready your go-bag and ensure everyone is familiar with the evacuation plan and location of your FORT, if available.
  • Position your go-bag by the front door or in your vehicle, verifying it contains fresh batteries, medications, and is tagged for evacuation.
  • Set out appropriate footwear, batteries and a flashlight in your sleeping area.
  • Keep your keys visible and accessible, and your vehicle fueled or charged and ready for evacuation.
  • Position your vehicle facing away from your home.
  • Ensure any gates are unlocked and open and disconnect your garage door from its automatic opener if it lacks a battery backup.
  • If available, test your generator.  Run water to test hoses, ensuring they can reach all areas of your home.
  • Remove and safely store any combustible items indoors. This may include grill covers and mats, outdoor furniture cushions, etc.
  • If any combustible items do remain outside, such as furniture and propane, ensure they are moved to a zone at least 30 feet from the home.
  • Ensure no combustible items are left in immediate proximity to your home.
  • Clear gutters and roof of extraneous combustible material.
  • Securely shut all doors and windows.
